My experience and level of sickness with my first two pregnancies was very similar. It is so hard to want to crawl out of your skin, when your baby is in that skin, especially when you've been longing to have a baby. Solidarity 🖤
The iron infusions will help! I think recognizing your depression early is such a skill. I did not realize I was experiencing post partum depression until I was very much in the thick of it. Despite knowing this could happen. There is kind of a dissonance.
Thank you for sharing Tasnim ❤️I feel you on so much of this. I’m also an OBGYN in addition to sharing some of your experience in pregnancy. A helpful resource has been Seven Starling, a perinatal therapy organization, to talk about pregnancy specific anxiety and depression. I found it very helpful. It can be done virtually and they have groups as well which can be nice to hear that we’re not alone in our experiences. They also accept insurance.
I’m so sorry! You’re not alone. I was nauseous for 8 months of my first pregnancy and then in a cloud of depression for 2.5y I didn’t know was depression—so you are way ahead! It does pass (I swear). The things that helped me ultimately were meditation and an app called unwinding anxiety also finding out I needed….. methylated folate? has your doctor talked to you about this? I couldn’t absorb folic acid, which we need to make certain neurotransmitters.
Priyanka, I’m so sorry you went through all that. I don’t see my own doctor till mid-August (lol) but allowed myself to finally get the support of a doula, which has already just been helpful in navigating a lot of little details I was googling like a madwoman. My South Asian hematologist (god bless him) informed me that I’m a carrier for Alpha Thalassemia and I’ve started iron infusions, which I hope will at least get me energetically through the last few weeks!
Thank you for opening to all of us and talking about something many women don’t do or feel ashamed to share those feelings. I’m sorry you are going through this, but by sharing and opening you are being super brave and a warrior. Many women would identify and hopefully find help! Sending you all my love
My heart goes out to you as you navigate all of these emotions. Thank you for sharing your experience and talking about such an important issue. I’m sure many women will read this, relate, and somehow feel less alone. Perhaps it’ll even give them the motivation to reach out for help to a doctor, spouse, or friend. I, too, had severe perinatal depression in both my pregnancies plus severe nausea. If you haven’t been through it, it’s impossible to understand the depths of despair and hopelessness you feel while trying to be a mom and carrying life in your belly. Almost at the final stretch! Thinking of you !
Thank you so much for sharing. Just a heads up that the American Pregnancy Association is an anti-abortion organization.
Thank you for the info!!
