It's sad to have to acknowledge that we, as buyers, are complicit. However, we should acknowledge that consumer pressure has improved the industry a lot but a lot of work needs to be done. I'm a firm believer that individual choices such as choosing not to shop at certain chains or to refuse paper cups are more powerful than we realise.
Great article. It makes me so angry that people with high disposable incomes do not shop better. The culture of fast fashion is pure insanity and people are so quick to forget the tragedies that unfolded and likely will again soon.
I remember the Rana Plaza tragedy like it was yesterday yet how quickly people move on when there is flashy marketing. I wish brands were more transparent but for now I will take comfort in acquiring no more Zara, h&m, mango, etc.
I have purchased maybe 3 or 4 items from Zara over the last 20 years and own only one of those items at the moment. Which, after reading this will be the only item I will own ( a pair of black studded flats that are maybe 10ish years old).
I do buy on occasion from COS and Uniqlo - do you know anything about them that I should be aware of?

I couldn’t agree more!

COS is owned by H&M. Uniqlo is also fast fashion and uses sweatshop labor.
